Closing out a successful $65M government reform project calls for a celebration of achievements, highlighting the impact of the work and the people that made that work possible.
When we first started to brainstorm how to put together the campaign to highlight MCC's Cabo Verde Compact successes, we kept coming up against the same question: "Where is Cabo Verde?"
This makes a lot of sense, as it is a small island chain off the West Coast of Africa, and know to some as a tourist destination for Western Europeans. For a largely American audience, we had to pre-empt that question, driving them straight to the value of the work. To do that, we built a pre-load map (using Mapbox) on a feature page that started with the West Coast of Africa visible, and zoomed in to Cabo Verde. Then, as you scrolled down the page to see the project's work across multiple islands, the map moved with you, creating a more dynamic experience that kept the viewers attention, while also tying the photos and videos to the geography.
We promoted the feature page through our social media channels, a stakeholder email, a trip blog produced by one of our executive staff, and even through the Embassies and Government of Cabo Verde (who were more than thrilled to share the success of their equally hard work).
The first project reformed the water and sanitation sector on the main island, improving the quality and quantity of water service to over a quarter of a million people. It's nearly impossible to overstate how vital water is to people and life in Cabo Verde -- a sentiment felt and expressed by all citizens.
The second project reformed the land titling and registration process across the islands. As Cabo Verde's economy is driven largely by tourism and clear land titles are essential for development and construction of hotels and resorts, this will open the potential for hundreds of millions of dollars of private investment and economic growth.
We told the story of this success through the experience of one local investor, who had a difficult time attracting foreign investors in his property, due to a lack of clarity around boundaries of his land that would have led to significant investment risk. Since the project has completed, his property is now highly sought after, and people are beginning to invest.
